Can you sheetrock over wood paneling

November 1, 4 min read. Dear James: My house has old paneling with vertical grooves, and I want to cover it with drywall and paint it. I am not sure how to handle fitting the wood trim around the doors and windows. Do you have any tips? Dear Ronald: Installing drywall over old paneling is one method to improve the appearance of a room.

As you noted, it can be a difficult task to extend all the window and door trim to fit over the thicker wall with the drywall attached, but it can certainly be done. Before you finalize your decision to add the drywall, consider just painting the old paneling. It might not sound attractive, but it actually can be. The vertical grooves in the paneling can create an interesting pattern and will simulate wallpaper to a degree. Give it a try first on the smallest wall in the room. Thoroughly scrub down the paneling with soap and water.

Lightly sand the surface with medium-grit sandpaper or a sanding block. Roll on a coat of primer and then paint in the color of your choice. Move the furniture back into place, hang any paintings and drapes and see how it looks.

I think you might be pleasantly surprised. If you still want to add drywall over the paneling, you will first have to remove all the window and door trim and the baseboards. Christopher Winkler I would consider leaving the ceiling texture unless your plan is to remove the beams probably faux.

What price range are we talking about? By the way It worked out quite well. I had blown in insulation on exterior walls so removing was not an option As far as the outlets went I just loosened the screws a bit and pulled them out slightly..

Good luck! Again, wait until the joint compound is fully dry. Apply a third coat of joint compound if the previous coat sank into the grooves.

To test if your joint compound sank into the lines of the paneling, close your eyes and run your fingertips across the groove. If you still feel a small groove, apply another coat of joint compound. When I filled my wood paneling grooves with joint compound, it took three coats to fill the lines to be completely smooth.

This product, made by USG, is a great choice for filling in paneling grooves. It is really easy to work with because it comes pre-mixed. This means that there is no guess work involved in figuring out how much water to add to the joint compound, because everything is already in the bucket. Plus, the dust control aspect of it means that it comes off in clumps when you sand it. Because of this, it is much more likely to fall to the ground instead of spreading throughout your whole house.

Now, you will still get dust all over if you sand any type of drywall compound, but not nearly as much if you use a dust control product. If you really want to almost eliminate the dust in your home, pick up one of these drywall sanding attachments for your shop vac. Because the sander is attached to the vacuum hose, it works really well for sucking up all the drywall dust produced by sanding. Once the joint compound is fully dry, lightly sand any high spots.

If you do need to sand, sand the edges of your joint compound in a light, circular motion. I know this seems redundant, but this is actually really important in making your wood paneling look like drywall. So, for this reason, you need to prime the whole wall again.

If you skipped this step, you paint would look striped.
