For Dobby, Harry represents justice. By defeating Voldemort, Harry improved lives for creatures battling the prejudice and bigotry of the pureblood wizards gathering with Voldemort. By protecting Harry, Dobby is also trying to protect a future for his own kind. Still, despite all the damage he does, Dobby obviously means well.
Finally, Dobby gets his reward. Indeed, the last chapter is called, "Dobby's Reward. When Harry hands Lucius Riddle's damaged diary wrapped in a smelly old sock, Lucius throws the sock to the floor — and Dobby catches it.
When Harry first asked Dobby to make him the promise, Dobby put on a huge smile but he technically didn't respond to the statement. It may have been inferred but Dobby never made a direct promise to his friend. In fact, Dobby saved him on multiple other instances before Deathly Hallows , such as giving him gillyweed for the Triwizard Tournament. It was likely that Dobby knew that he would have to put his life on the line for Harry in the future with the current state of the wizarding world.
Dobby was extremely loyal to Harry after he freed the house-elf years prior in the Harry Potter series. The creature did everything he could to repay Harry but it was never enough.
Dobby viewed Harry in such high regard and his selfless demeanor took over when he went back to Malfoy Manor.
He wasn't just saving Harry at that moment, he was saving Ron, Hermione, and the rest of the group. Harry was Dobby's best friend and no kind of promise would have ever stopped Dobby from putting his life on the line if it meant giving the wizard another chance.
