Our range of LED dimmers are changeable between trailing edge and leading edge modes but are set to trailing edge mode by default. All dimmer switches have an operational range or load that they can work within, a w dimmer can have 10 x 40 w lamps on it , 8 x 50w lamps on it or any combination that adds up to a maximum of w. A w Incandescent or Halogen dimmer may have a w loading when used in conjunction with an LED light source.
So to summarise mains dimmers that are LED compatible have two separate min — max ranges; one for LEDs and the other for incandescent or halogen lamps.
The key is to always check before you buy. The dimmer manufacturer will provide the min-max levels of load and the lamp manufacturer will provide a list of all the compatible dimmers they have tested their bulbs with.

LED vs. Induction Lighting. March 24, Janelle Penny. There are many types of light bulbs and capsule lamps that can be dimmed but the requirements for each type can vary. If you select the wrong type of dimmer it may not work, could lead to reduced lamp life or even blow the dimmer or light fitting in extreme circumstances. If you mistakenly connect too many lights or transformers to an an intelligent dimmer it will protect itself from failure by turning the lights down or off until the load is corrected.
Leading edge dimmers are the most commonly used to dim incandescent and mains voltage halogen light bulbs and capsules. They are also used to dim most electronic low voltage transformers, including wire-wound or toroidal transformers and can also be used to dim constant current dimmable LED drivers under certain circumstances that will be explained later. All dimmers are rated by wattage and leading edge dimmers are no exception. They are commonly available in w, w, w and w modules.
It is important to note that they also have a minimum load requirement of 25w, 40w, w and w respectively. GU10, G9 and GZ10 halogen lamps and capsules tend to arc in the latter part of their life. This is not dangerous in any way and is a characteristic of halogen lamps.
This arcing creates an additional load on the dimmer and can overload the module resulting in excess heat and premature failure. The first indication of this happening is an increase in noise, often heard as a buzz from the dimmer switch. It is important to note that all quality branded halogen capsules incorporate a fused link to protect the circuit in case of a short within the lamp. Non-branded cheap generic halogen lamps do not have this function and should be avoided.
Trailing edge dimmers are far more complicated than their leading edge counterpart and are more expensive to produce and purchase. They incorporate many features such as soft start; smooth control, silent running and multi-way dimming that greatly enhance the life of the lamps and fittings. They are commonly used to dim most electronic low voltage transformers ELV with capacitive loads on the primary circuit.
At the time of writing LED units were more expensive to produce than induction lamps, that could change however. A new type of induct ion lamp has been developed called the high efficiency plasma or HEP. The HEP lamp performs at 90 lumens per system watt. Components: It uses a quartz RF resonator and integral plasma burner with a transition unit and magnetron.
The integrated burner use metal halide salts and an inert gas. Microwave energy within the lamp resonates and ionizes the gas, this combines with metal halides to make an intense white light. Read more from its manufacturer Ceravision here. The LEP was developed earlier in , it uses a dielectric waveguide made of ceramic. Much of the light was lost in the ceramic waveguide resulting in loss of efficiency.
Ceravision changed the design using a clear quartz waveguide which improved the lamp and forms what we call the HEP. Sulfur Lamp. The sulfur lamp is also a plasma lamp. It uses microwave radiation to excite sulfur vapor mixed with argon to create light. You can identify the lamp by a metal screen on the outside of the lamp. The bulb operates at a very high temperature and most models needs a fan for cooling.
The lamp was developed in the s and failed to be a commercial success. It may come back into the public eye as it is improved. Improvements include eliminating the fan. Inventors and Developments.
Above: J. Thomson built various induction lamps to study the electromagnetic field, however his work did not focus on creating consumer products. Hittorf is also known for the discovery of the cathode-ray tube in Munster, Germany. Thomson thoroughly studies the phenomena of the electrodeless discharge lamp after initial discovery by Johann Wilhelm Hittorf Thomson like Hittorf is an established physicist.
Cambridge, England. His lamp looked like a large lightbulb and had strange greenish phosphors. His lamp was powered by the electromagnetic field of a nearby large "Tesla Coil".
Tesla brought the lamp into the public eye and further improved the lamp. The industrialist later sued academian J. Thomson in order to secure rights to try to make money from it. A practical consumer lamp was never developed. New York, NY. He already had expertise as the inventor of the first commercial mercury vapor lamps. He worked on induction lamps with a sphere shape and double sphere shape, with external induction coils wrapped around the sphere or "waist" of the double sphere.
PC Hewitt also developed internal induction lamps. The induction lamp moves out of experimental stages and the commercial era of the lamp begins.
